There is more design logic in Spalted Wood than its palette alone suggests; the real structure comes from pale wood grain crossed by dark organic spalting lines, framed by black hardware. The finish becomes more convincing once the surface is read as natural timber and dark metal, because the graphics and the object start to belong to the same world. Its curatorial strength is the way it suggests an entire material world around a single weapon.
